The Trench That Does Not Belong

Most of the North Sea is, geologically speaking, boring in the most useful way: a shallow, mostly flat shelf sea rarely deeper than 90 meters, the flooded edge of the European continental shelf rather than a true ocean basin. The Norwegian Trench breaks that pattern entirely. Running parallel to the southern Norwegian coast from north of Bergen around into the Skagerrak, it plunges to roughly 700 meters, nearly eight times the depth of the surrounding shelf, a narrow gouge fifty to ninety-five kilometers wide that has no obvious counterpart anywhere else in the North Sea basin. Its origin is glacial rather than tectonic: repeated ice ages sent glaciers grinding along this same corridor, each one scouring the trench deeper into the underlying rock, a process unrelated to the plate-boundary mechanisms that carve most of the world's deep ocean trenches. The result is a sea that reads, on a depth map, as almost entirely one shallow color with a single dark slash along one edge, the kind of anomaly that tells a geologist the North Sea basin and the Norwegian Trench were never really shaped by the same forces at all.
