A sea almost entirely enclosed by land, bordered by southern Europe, the Levant coast of Asia and the North African coast, and connected to the Atlantic Ocean only through the narrow Strait of Gibraltar. Its enclosed shape and the dense scatter of harbors and islands along its coasts made it a corridor for maritime contact between the peoples of three continents from antiquity onward.
