Albany is the capital city of the U.S. state of New York and the economic and cultural center of the Capital District. The oldest city in New York, it began as the Dutch trading post of Fort Orange in 1624 before Algonquian-speaking Mohicans gave way to colonial settlement. It became a major nineteenth-century transportation hub as the eastern terminus of the Erie Canal.
