Baton Rouge is the capital city of Louisiana and the state's second most populous municipality, sitting on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River as the seat of East Baton Rouge Parish. It has developed into a significant industrial, petrochemical, medical, research and technology hub for the southern United States, and is home to Louisiana State University and Southern University.
