Belmopan is the capital city of Belize, founded as a planned community in 1970 after Hurricane Hattie nearly destroyed the former coastal capital, Belize City, in 1961. Established on 1 August 1970, it is one of the newest national capitals in the world and is the smallest capital city by population in continental North, Central and South America, with 27,870 residents as of the 2024 estimate.
