Buenos Aires, officially the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, is the capital and largest city of Argentina. It lies on the southwest shore of the Río de la Plata and is classified as an Alpha− global city. First established by Pedro de Mendoza in 1536 and later abandoned, it was reestablished by Juan de Garay in 1580; the city-proper population was 3,121,707 at the 2022 census.
