Canberra is the capital city of Australia, purpose built as a compromise between Sydney and Melbourne following federation. Designed by American architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin around the artificial Lake Burley Griffin, it houses Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial and the nation's principal cultural institutions. It is Australia's eighth-largest city by population.
