Copenhagen is the capital and most populous city of Denmark, with a city-proper population of 671,714 and an urban population of 1.4 million. Settled as a Viking fishing village in the 10th century, it became the capital of Denmark in the early 15th century, following Bishop Absalon's 1167 fortress on Slotsholmen.
