Denver is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Colorado, a consolidated city and county in the South Platte River valley on the western edge of the High Plains, just east of the Rocky Mountain Front Range. Its nickname, the Mile High City, comes from its official elevation of exactly one mile above sea level. Denver is the economic and cultural center of the broader Front Range Urban Corridor, whose metropolitan area holds about 3.1 million residents.
