Indianapolis is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Indiana, serving as the county seat of Marion County on the west fork of the White River in the state's central region. Its official slogan, the Crossroads of America, reflects its long standing as a transportation hub near major North American markets. As of the 2020 census the city ranks as the sixteenth most populous in the United States and the fourth largest state capital by population.
