Juneau is the capital of the U.S. state of Alaska, located along the Gastineau Channel in Southeast Alaska, and was named the capital in 1906 when the territorial government moved from Sitka. Uniquely among U.S. state capitals, no roads connect the city to the rest of the state or to the contiguous United States, and it is the second largest city in the United States by land area following its 1970 merger with Douglas and the surrounding borough.
