Libreville is the capital and largest city of Gabon, on the Gabon Estuary in the northwestern Estuaire Province. Founded in 1849 as a settlement for slaves freed by the French navy, it now houses about one-third of Gabon's national population and serves as the country's primary financial, diplomatic and port centre.
