Little Rock is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Arkansas, lying on the south bank of the Arkansas River near the state's geographic center. It was founded in 1821 and named for a rock formation along the river identified by French explorer Jean-Baptiste Benard de la Harpe in 1722. The city gained international prominence during the Civil Rights era, playing a notable role in the 1957 desegregation of Little Rock Central High School.
