Madison is the capital of the U.S. state of Wisconsin and its second most populous city, with a downtown centrally located on an isthmus between Lakes Mendota and Monona. Founded in 1836 and named after American founding father and president James Madison, it was incorporated as a village in 1846 and as a city in 1856.
