Montgomery is the capital city of the U.S. state of Alabama and the county seat of Montgomery County, named for Continental Army Major General Richard Montgomery and standing beside the Alabama River on the Gulf Coastal Plain. It served as the first capital of the Confederate States of America in 1861 and later became a major center of the Civil Rights Movement, hosting the Montgomery bus boycott and the Selma to Montgomery marches.
