Phoenix is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Arizona, in the Salt River Valley of the Sonoran Desert. Established as an agricultural settlement in 1867 and incorporated in 1881, it transformed into a major metropolitan center after the Second World War, driven by air conditioning, high-tech industry growth and water management projects. It is the fifth-most populous city in the United States.
