Port Moresby is the capital and largest city of Papua New Guinea, on the Coral Sea coast of the Papuan Peninsula. Named after British Royal Navy officer Admiral Fairfax Moresby by his son John Moresby, who charted the harbour in 1873, it grew from a colonial trading post into the nation's political, economic and cultural hub. With a population of 756,754 at the 2024 census, it is the country's most populous city.
