Porto-Novo is the official capital and second-largest city of Benin, on an inlet of the Gulf of Guinea in the southeast of the country. It became the capital of French Dahomey by 1900 and retained that status after Benin's 1960 independence, while Cotonou serves as the administrative seat of government.
