Pretoria is the executive capital of South Africa, seat of the executive branch of government and of foreign embassies, about 56 km north-northeast of Johannesburg. Founded in 1855, the city is a major academic centre hosting several universities and is nicknamed the Jacaranda City for its thousands of jacaranda trees.
