Providence is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Rhode Island and the third most populous city in New England. It was established by Reformed Baptist theologian Roger Williams, who named the area for God's merciful Providence, and it developed as a busy port thanks to its advantageous location. Providence became one of America's earliest industrial centers, noted for textile manufacturing and later machine tool, jewelry and silverware industries.
