Raleigh is the capital city of the U.S. state of North Carolina and the second-most populous city in the state. It was deliberately planned and built in 1792 to serve as the seat of state government, with a grid layout centered on Union Square, and is known as the City of Oaks for its tree-lined streets. Raleigh anchors the Research Triangle region alongside Durham and Chapel Hill.
