Richmond is the capital city of the U.S. state of Virginia and has been an independent city since 1871. Positioned along the James River fall line in the Piedmont region, it grew from a major colonial settlement into the capital of the Confederacy during the American Civil War. It is the fourth-most populous municipality in Virginia and a hub for law, finance and government in the Southeast.
