Armenia is a landlocked country in the Armenian highlands of West Asia, bordered by Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east, and Iran and the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan to the south. It gained independence from the Soviet Union on 23 September 1991. It is a unitary parliamentary republic. Its capital is Yerevan.

Armenia gained independence from the Soviet Union on 23 September 1991. This modern republic is distinct from the ancient Kingdom of Urartu lineage, which dates to around 860 BC.
