Austria is a landlocked country in Central Europe within the Eastern Alps, comprising nine federated states with Vienna as its capital and largest city. Its modern statehood has no single clean founding date: the Second Republic was established on 27 April 1945 after Nazi annexation and occupation, and full sovereignty was restored by the Austrian State Treaty on 27 July 1955. Austria is a semi-presidential republic and a member of the United Nations and the European Union.
