El Salvador is a Central American country on the Pacific coast, bordered by Guatemala and Honduras. It gained independence from Spain on 15 September 1821. It endured a civil war from 1979 to 1992, concluding with the Chapultepec Peace Accords. Its capital is San Salvador.
