The Gambia is a country in West Africa occupying a narrow strip along the Gambia River, surrounded on three sides by Senegal and with a short Atlantic coastline of about 80 kilometers on its western extremity. It gained independence from the United Kingdom on 18 February 1965. It is a unitary presidential republic. Its capital is Banjul.
