Indonesia is a country in Southeast Asia and Oceania, lying between the Indian and Pacific oceans. Comprising between 13,000 and 17,500 islands, including Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, and parts of Borneo and New Guinea, it is the world's largest archipelagic state. Indonesia proclaimed independence from the Netherlands on 17 August 1945, in the aftermath of World War II. Its capital and largest city is Jakarta.
