Iraq, officially the Republic of Iraq, is located within the Middle East, bordered by Saudi Arabia to the south, Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, the Persian Gulf and Kuwait to the southeast, Jordan to the southwest, and Syria to the west. Iraq gained formal independence in 1932, becoming a member of the League of Nations; a republic was later declared in 1958. Its capital is Baghdad.
