Lithuania is one of the three Baltic states, lying on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea, bordered by Latvia to the north, Belarus to the east and south, Poland to the south, and the Russian semi-exclave of Kaliningrad Oblast to the southwest. Its Act of Independence was signed in 1918; Soviet and Nazi occupation interrupted statehood from 1940 to 1990, when it was restored. It is the largest of the three Baltic states by both area and population. It is a parliamentary republic. Its capital is Vilnius.

Lithuania's Act of Independence was signed 16 February 1918. Soviet and Nazi occupation from 1940 to 1990 interrupted statehood; the Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania restored it on 11 March 1990, formally recognized internationally in 1991.
