Oman is a country in the southeastern Arabian Peninsula in West Asia, sharing land borders with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen, and maritime borders with Iran and Pakistan. Its statehood is ancient and multi-stage with no single clean founding date; the current state form, the Sultanate of Oman, was proclaimed on 9 August 1970, renamed from the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman. It is an absolute monarchy ruled by a sultan, who serves as both head of state and head of government. Its capital is Muscat.
