Portugal, officially the Portuguese Republic, is a country in Southwestern Europe, on the southwestern portion of the Iberian Peninsula, bordered by Spain to the north and east. Portugal was established as a county of the Kingdom of Leon in 868 and formally as a kingdom in 1179, its history running through the 1139 kingdom declaration and the 1640 restoration of independence from Spain, with no single clean founding date. Its capital is Lisbon.
