Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor, occupies the eastern half of the island of Timor in Southeast Asia, together with the Oecussi exclave on the island's northwestern coast and the islands of Atauro and Jaco, bordered by Indonesia to the west with Australia across the Timor Sea to the south. It declared independence from Portugal on 28 November 1975; Indonesia invaded days later and occupied the territory until a United Nations-administered transition restored independence on 20 May 2002. It is a unitary semi-presidential republic. Its capital is Dili.

Timor-Leste (East Timor) declared independence from Portugal on 28 November 1975. Indonesia invaded and annexed the territory within days, and a twenty-four-year occupation followed until a UN-administered transition (1999-2002) restored independence on 20 May 2002.
