Togo, officially the Togolese Republic, is a West African nation bordered by Ghana, Benin and Burkina Faso, with a coastline on the Gulf of Guinea. It gained independence from France on 27 April 1960. Its capital is Lome.

Togo gained independence from France on 27 April 1960. The former German colony of Togoland was partitioned into British and French League of Nations mandates after World War I, later UN trust territories, with French Togoland becoming the independent state of Togo.
