Turkmenistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia bordered by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Iran and the Caspian Sea, dominated by the Karakum Desert, which covers over 80 percent of its territory. Its declaration of sovereignty from the Soviet Union is dated 22 August 1990, with full independence recognized on 26 December 1991. Its capital is Ashgabat.
