Zambia is a landlocked country in south-central Africa, bordered by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and Angola. It consists mostly of high plateaus and is drained by the Zambezi and Kafue river systems; Victoria Falls lies on the Zambezi at its border with Zimbabwe. Originally inhabited by Khoisan peoples before the Bantu expansion, the territory came under British control in the 1890s and was known as Northern Rhodesia until independence in 1964, when Kenneth Kaunda became its first president.
