Auckland is one of the sixteen regions of New Zealand, taking its name from the Auckland urban area it encompasses along with smaller towns, rural areas and the islands of the Hauraki Gulf. Containing 34 percent of the country's residents, it has by far the largest population and economy of any New Zealand region, though the second-smallest land area.
