Hawaii is an island state of the United States in the Pacific Ocean about 2,000 miles southwest of the U.S. mainland, one of two non-contiguous states along with Alaska and the only state that is an archipelago. Admitted to the Union in 1959 as the 50th state, its capital is Honolulu.
