Atlanta is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Georgia, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Established as a railroad terminus in the mid-nineteenth century, it became a crucial Confederate hub during the Civil War before emerging as a major industrial and commercial center during Reconstruction. It remains a significant civil rights historical site and a diverse economic engine in transportation, technology and finance.
