Monrovia is the capital and largest city of Liberia, on the Atlantic coast at Cape Mesurado. Founded in 1822 by the American Colonization Society as a settlement for formerly enslaved African Americans and named after U.S. President James Monroe, it serves as the country's political, administrative, economic and cultural center.
