Liberia is a country on the West African coast, bordered by Sierra Leone to the northwest, Guinea to the north, Ivory Coast to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south and southwest. It was founded in 1822 as a settlement of freed slaves and free-born Black Americans, and it formally declared independence in 1847, becoming Africa's first modern republic. It is a presidential republic. Its capital is Monrovia.
