Sacramento is the capital city of the U.S. state of California and the seat of California's state government. Located at the confluence of the Sacramento and American rivers, it grew from a Gold Rush settlement into the permanent state capital in 1854. Today it is the largest city in the Sacramento Valley, known for its extensive urban tree canopy and a mix of preserved nineteenth-century architecture and modern development.
