California is the most populous U.S. state, stretching along the Pacific coast of the Western United States between Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and Mexico. Admitted to the Union in 1850 as the 31st state, its capital is Sacramento while Los Angeles is its largest city. The state's geography spans Sierra Nevada peaks, the Central Valley and the Mojave and Colorado deserts, and its economy is the largest of any U.S. state.
