Santiago is the capital and largest city of Chile and one of the largest cities in the Americas. It houses the presidential palace and the main organs of the executive and judiciary, and functions as the country's principal industrial, commercial and financial hub. Founded by Pedro de Valdivia on 12 February 1541, it had a population of 6,269,384 at the 2017 census.
