Burundi, officially the Republic of Burundi, is a landlocked country in East Africa, located in the Great Rift Valley at the junction between the African Great Lakes region and southeastern Africa. Burundi claimed independence from Belgium on 1 July 1962 and legally changed its name from Ruanda-Urundi to Burundi. Its political capital is Gitega, while Bujumbura remains its economic capital.
