A river flowing north through northeastern Africa from its headwater lakes in the Great Lakes region to a broad delta on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt, formed by the union of the White Nile and Blue Nile at Khartoum in Sudan. Its predictable annual flood, driven by monsoon rains far to the south, deposited the silt that made intensive agriculture possible along an otherwise arid corridor, and the river has been a defining feature of settlement in the region for millennia.
