China occupies nearly the entire East Asian landmass, an area approaching the whole of Europe and about one-fourteenth of Earth's land surface. With more than four thousand years of recorded history, it is among the few countries that also flourished economically and culturally in the earliest stages of world civilization; the Shang dynasty, from around the seventeenth century BCE, is the first for which definite historical material survives, followed by the unifying Qin and the long Han dynasty from 206 BCE. The present People's Republic was proclaimed in 1949. Its capital, Beijing, already described on this atlas as the country's cultural, economic and communications center, was chosen as the capital of the People's Republic in 1949.
