The region of Asia comprising China, Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea and Taiwan, bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the east and historically bound together by the spread of Chinese script, Confucian and Buddhist thought, and centuries of tributary and trade relations. China alone accounts for roughly four-fifths of the region land area and population.
