Eritrea is a country in the Horn of Africa in East Africa, bordered by Ethiopia to the south, Sudan to the west, and Djibouti to the southeast, with a long Red Sea coastline. It has never conducted a national census, so its population figures carry significant uncertainty. It gained de facto independence from Ethiopia in 1991, formalized de jure in 1993. It is governed as a unitary one-party presidential republic. Its capital is Asmara.

Population
3,600,000 1
Eritrea has never conducted a national census. Its own Wikipedia infobox states a 2024 estimate range of 3.5 to 6.4 million; the Demographics of Eritrea article cites a UN DESA estimate of about 3.6 million (2021) against a COMESA estimate of about 6.7 million (2019), a spread of nearly double. The value recorded here is the lower, UN-sourced end of that range; the true figure is genuinely unknown within a margin of several million.
