Fiji is an archipelagic country in Melanesia, part of Oceania in the South Pacific Ocean, comprising over 330 islands of which roughly 110 are permanently inhabited, about 1,100 nautical miles northeast of New Zealand. It gained independence from the United Kingdom on 10 October 1970. It is a unitary parliamentary republic. Its capital is Suva.
