The Netherlands, also informally known as Holland, is a country in Northwestern Europe, with overseas territories in the Caribbean, and is the largest of the four constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Its independence from Spanish rule emerged gradually rather than on a single date, from the Act of Abjuration on 26 July 1581 through the Peace of Munster on 30 January 1648, which formally recognized Dutch sovereignty. Amsterdam is the constitutional capital and largest city, while The Hague is the seat of government.
